Visit the best wineries in Stuttgart and you’ll gain a better understanding of this important German wine-making region. Stuttgart and its surroundings traditionally cultivate white wines like Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc and light reds made with the Pinot Noir grape variety. The annual Weindorf festival is held in the city, where visitors can enjoy up to 500 wines. And there are 8 local ‘wine routes’ to explore as well as a Museum of Viniculture.
The Stuttgart area provides an ideal situation for growing grapes, as it‘s in the centre of a valley surrounded by steep hills. Many of those hills have become vineyards, tended by generations of German winemakers. Some of Stuttgart’s closest wineries are accessible by public transport, ideal if you’re short on time but want to enjoy a tour or wine tasting within easy commuting distance of the city.

Weingut Wohrwag is a small winery of just 4.5 hectares in the eastern suburbs of Stuttgart. Although it’s small, the winery grows 4 different kinds of grape: Riesling for white wine lovers and Trollinger, Pinot Noir, and Lemberger for reds. The grapes grow in the steep, manicured vineyards close to Stuttgart and use traditional techniques to create a range of delicious wines.
Following a unique German tradition, a broomstick is displayed outside Weingut Wohrwag at certain times of year indicating that a home-cooking restaurant is open for business. At this winery, the ‘broom’, as it’s called, takes place in September and from January to March. The joy of a broom restaurant is the simplicity of the cooking accompanied by the accomplished Wohrwag wines.

The Weingut Beurer is an eco-winery just outside Stuttgart. Originally part of a winemaking cooperative, the Beurer family branched out on their own in 1997. And in 2003, they began making wine that relies on spontaneous fermentation, rather than added yeast, to produce the alcohol. This has created wines with an organic status that’s appealing to many wine fans.
Another focus of the winery is reviving long-forgotten grapes that are native to the Stuttgart region, something that is of growing importance in Germany.
