The room opposite to me had a major incident on the morning of Saturday 8th March. I was awoken in the morning to shouts of "fire", along with an intermittent fire alarm. I had to rush from my room into a smoke-filled corridor and then out onto the street. I stood with the other hotel guests, with no direction on where to stand, or any sign of a hotel-fire-marshall, for around 45 minutes. When they did appear, their megaphone did not work, so the crowd could not hear what was being communicated. This situation lasted nearly 2 hours whilst the fire service and ambulance attended the scene. The guest in the opposite room was eventually wheeled out of the hotel by the paramedics and taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, we were allowed back into the hotel but hotel communication was to a minimum and they never told the guests what had happened. I only found out through repeated questions to the receptionist, that the guest who had gone to hospital had smoke inhalation and it was not a fire.
The aftercare was awful.I asked for a phonecall from the hotel manager, two days post-event and was given a time window for the following day between 9-5pm to expect the call. When I spoke with the manager I was still given no explanation for what happened (I was actually advised to read about it in the press, where I learnt it was a faulty air conditioner) and my experience and concerns for future visits were minimised.
After using this hotel for the past year, I do not intend to stay here again.
