Old Rail Cultural Shopping District is a pedestrianized shopping area in downtown Hualien. The paved blacktop is ideal for walking on, and there are smart shops and good signage. The name "Old Rail" comes from the fact that trains used to pass through here. Following relocation of the train lines in Hualien, the area fell into a state of decay. You can still see traces of old railroad tracks on the ground. The local government set about revitalizing the area, transforming it into a shopping district with a unified image. Many new shops opened and large numbers of tourists now flock here, making the area a new attraction in Hualien. The shopping area has many indigenous shops and fashion boutiques aimed at younger shoppers. Scores of young people gather here on weekend evenings, and you'll often see street performers.
