Summary - Tropicana 218 Macalister (Itinerary #7500236210228)
I booked a 3-night stay (28 Dec to 30 Dec) at Tropicana 218 Macalister, Penang because the pictures of the room set-up posted on Expedia looks neat, nice and tidy.
1. I only realised the room that I booked is only a small studio unit (13A-07(1)) when told by the caretaker upon our arrival. I didn’t expect to get a small studio apartment by paying an average of RM400/night.
2. We didn’t get to sleep on a foam or spring mattress but rather on a 1.5 inch layer of sponge on a hard surface. Our sleep wasn’t comfortable at all.
3. Pillows are really thin and looks cheap and there were no pillow cases for the extra 2 pillows.
4. Both bed sheet and pillow cases doesn’t appear like they were thoroughly washed and cleaned.
5. Air-cond doesn’t work at all throughout our stay. Thank God the ceiling fan works
6. Iron doesn’t work well because we can’t get it hot enough to iron our clothes
7. TV is not fully functioning as there’s no sound from speaker when connected to Netflix. There are no free channels too. Why?
8. Sofa seat is hard and uncomfortable. My back is rested against a wooden plank!
9. There is a refrigerator but the freezer is not functioning well because the ice cream we bought melted the next day.
10. There are two towels provided but doesn’t look fresh and clean. They are made from thin material and of no quality.
I believe the owner doesn’t bother at all about customer comfort.

It was not a pleasant stay for the price paid. It is a lovely studio apartment but several matters stood out for me:
- Towels provided were not fresh. One towel was a regular white towel while the other was a microfiber towel. There were ants on it.
- The mattress was not a spring mattress. Solid hard.
- Toilet had very little provisions. No complimentary toothbrush or even glasses for rinsing. Soap and shampoo were off-the-shelf purchases.
- The furnishing was minimal and lacked design.
- Instructions to enter the room, particularly on the door code number was not clear. There is an initial message on how to access the apartment building but instruction did not inform that tenants needed to contact the owner to ask for the code number. My room neighbour kept trying to unlock my room door in their confusion.
- That being said, the door lock is an electronic one. So if the homeowners wanted, they could come in any time the tenant is in that apartment. I felt insecure while being in the room.
Overall I felt like I was living in someone's used place. For the price paid I could have gotten into a decent hotel nearby along with hotel workers to serve our needs. I'm afraid I won't be coming back.

3. No daily cleaning service yet have to pay for cleaning fee.
4. Body shampoo run out and no refilling
5. Bed sheet have dirty strains and not look like newly replaced bedsheet.
6. Have to use same towel for entire stay.

Pros:
Short distance for food, shopping and sight seeing.
Property units interior furniture layouts nicely arranged and have good city/sea-view.
Cons:
Lack of proper arrangements and communications in between Plush Services staffs and building managements.
