The calm waters and secluded beaches make this spot ideal for travellers seeking upscale relaxation in a natural setting.
Kampung Air floats above the South China Sea on weathered wooden stilts, connected by a maze of narrow walkways. The turquoise-trimmed mosque stands as the community's gathering point. Family-run stalls serve up fresh seafood and coconut curries for just a few ringgit. Basic homestays in traditional stilt houses offer authentic cultural immersion with family meals included. Water taxis provide the main access, shuttling between the village and Kota Kinabalu waterfront for a truly unique Malaysian experience.

best night market near the water - what an abundance of fresh seafood - variety of fish and fruits and veggies - and a day trip to the islands - well worth staying a few days in KK

The mountain is the best. Fish spa was good and full of fun. Island and others are OK, not unique. The upside-down home is not worthy of money. The good thing is that I spent time with my family.

"I truly enjoyed my stay at this charming hotel. The atmosphere was spacious and quaint, offering a peaceful retreat while still being incredibly convenient. Its location made it easy to access all parts of Kota Kinabalu, whether for sightseeing, dining, or shopping. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the overall experience was smooth and relaxing. Highly recommended for anyone looking for comfort and accessibility in one place!"
"Spacious clean rooms. Friendly staff. Incredible food. Excellent location- walking distance to the food markets, Sunday markets, the ferry port and malls. Special mention again to all staff there- extremely friendly and helpful. We had a great stay, thank you!"
"The Shangti-La is just a step up from other hotels. Yes, it's big and busy but the staff go out of their way to really spoil you. I'm vegan and they bent over backwards to ensure I had a great breakfast, sent soy milk to my room tweaked dishes so I ate well. And the location - oh my. We stayed in a garden room and could walk straight out looking at the sea. Room had a shower and a bath, was well stocked. Water in the fridge every day. Their Spa was great too. I can't think of anything bad about the place. We just didn't want to leave. "
