VesConte Palace: a Museum-like Accommodation
Old World venue with significant artwork and artifacts stemming back hundreds of years from the original family who owned the palace. Of interest to us were original letters from prior Popes to the Cozza family. Note, the palace chapel is more historic than functional.
The palace was begging to be explored, which proved challenging in December with many unheated ballrooms, libraries and parlors. Our room was comfortable, quaint, although somewhat sparse on comfort items. The bathroom had surprisingly limited supplies, with single-use body-wash packets for showering.
The hotel managers (as of Dec 2024), Jonnie and Laura were extremely friendly and helpful during our stay. It was not clear that the hotel would not be serving meals within the hotel, rather contracting with another restaurant establishment with great service.
Jonnie provided a nice wine tasting experience, reasonably priced, although quite chilly without heaters in the wine cellar. He was helpful with a last-minute taxi to Viterbo. Laura recommend a friendly and accommodating taxi service to Orvieto.
It’s been over seven years since the palace was last updated, and subsequently featured by Forbes Magazine (Impeccable Italy: Il Vesconte). Covid seemingly took a toll on the hotel amenities as the experience did not seem to match up to the 2018 article. We are hoping the Duke will continue to invest in the palace encouraging return-visits to the historic VesConte Palace and the charming town of Bolsena.
