Beware the “50,000 Peso Towel Scam” at Hotel Summe

I recently stayed at Hotel Summer Frente Al Mar in Cartagena, and while the property itself may look fine, guests — especially foreigners — should be aware of a dishonest practice I encountered at checkout. Upon leaving, I was told to wait while staff “checked” the room. A young employee returned and claimed I had to pay 50,000 pesos because the towels were “dirty.” Let me be clear: towels are supposed to be dirty — that’s why hotels wash them. I had no stains, no blood, no wine, nothing unusual. Just normal use from sweat, exercise, beach sand, and daily showering. This was nothing more than a hustle aimed at taking advantage of foreigners who might not question it. This kind of behavior is unacceptable. Hotels that rely on international tourism should not be running scams on their guests. Travelers deserve honesty, not intimidation over something as absurd as “dirty towels.” My advice: do not stay at this property unless you’re prepared to deal with scams like this. And if you do, make sure you bring your own towel.

The hotel is pretty good for the price, but they only have one restaurant with the daily menu only and you have to cross the street and walk quite a while to get to the beach and the swimming pool closes at 8 PM

A jucuzzi tub is useless w/o hot water, ditto for shower. Ceiling fan speed was either Off or Insane Hi speed, wall air conditioner was feeble, couldn’t put lunch or dinner meals on my room. And the beach was trashy and filled with peddlers hounding us.

The room was great. Just that you need to put the key card in a slot in order to have power - wich includes air conditioning. The restaurant is very ordinary. It's not a huge problem because there's an excellent restaurant at a 3 min walk (Zona Norte). But the breakfasts aren't good. The beach is at a 5 min walk, wich is great. Everything else is a bit far, but most of the time, there's drivers waiting at the door and they'll drive you for a reasonable price. Book your activities at the entry hall; it's cheaper than using apps. The pool on the roof is really nice. All in all, a good experience.

Is absolutely not like on the pictures at all, front desk acts like if they are making you a favor by letting you stay at the hotel, when you ask for some help or information the respond in a cold way and not helpful or friendly, the brakefast bar on the pictures doesn't exist, you seat down and some one comes and ask what you want for the Free breakfast and you got to wait for the food to come over, is hard to know what to eat if you are not Colombian or person because you don't know most times the name of the breads etc , nothing comes with ice on the restaurant because the only place they carry ice is on the bar by the pool and that time that I ask for s cup of ice the ice truck didn't delivered that day dear good lol any way I would not recommend this hotel is just they have a way of doing things that just doesn't cut it for me I'm no been hard on the place just the management is all wrong,,,,,the ladies from cleaning and restaurant are very nice oooooh I forgot my wife Saw a small live roach on our room 505, another thing if you order food to be delivered you got to meet the delivery person outside because they are not allowed on the reception 😕

Nice but far from the city . The hotel staff are weird . They were supposed to charge the card on the booking then they said no, they would charge on site . Or remake the booking here so that is what I did . Offered tours after I had gotten them elsewhere . It is like they live in another time

The description of the front ocean view is not accurate. I paid extra for the best view. There is a freeway right in front of the beach which is actually pretty far . Not worth it. Loud cars and trucks and the airport planes. There were vendors in front of the large front windows with signs to sell stuff. So we had to close the curtains to walk around . They were looking right in. Also when it rains…and it did. The sewage backs up and we couldn’t sleep well due to the smell. Meaning the toilet gurgling. Would not recommend.

This hotel is infested with cockroachs. The day I arrived the house/Airbnb next door to the hotel played music extremely loudly without pause for the entirety of the night and next day only to stop at 7pm the next day. This was the only day this happened but the hotel offered no solution for this issue. The next day, the housekeeping staff dug into my bag and stole expensive jewelry that was hidden in-between my clothes. A police report was made and the hotel offered no solution or retribution for these issues. The staff wouldn't even contact the police for me and I had to end up calling the emergency line to get assistance. I would recommend anyone considering this hotel to steer clear and avoid it like the plague.

The hotel is very close to the airport it literally took 10 minutes by Uber to get tthe hotel and vice versa. But the down side is that you will hear the planes landing and taking off. I sleep with earplugs (as I'm a light sleeper) so the noise didn't disturb me. My room was large, nice, simple, and clean. I appreciated the air conditioner and ceiling fan. A large floor to ceiling window provided fantastic views of the skyline and beach / sea. However, the finish of my hotel room was a bit poor. The door frame was coming away from the wall and it was roughly cut out around the light switch. The bath towels are tiny, so much so I thought they were hand towels. The shower wasn't hot enough for my liking. The shower head is an overhead waterfall, so it was awkward when trying to void getting my head/ hair wet. The breakfast was VERY BASIC only a few simple options and very repetitive. There are a few local restaurants near that have an extensive menu with reasonable priced options. Staff were attentive and accommodate food restrictions/allergies. However, locals socialise outside, they are harmless, but it's worth being alert. The rooftop pool was lovely, it offered lovely skyline views and the music created a fun vibe. The beach is just across the road so that's convenient if you want to go for an ocean swim. Hotel staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. Overall I had a good stay, Summer hotel is a decent affordable option with minimal frills.
