We stayed in Hotel Engel on the way back from a month in Italy. It was the perfect distance from Lake Garda, allowing us some leeway on getting through the Gotthard tunnel. The drive up the mountain to reach it was stunning, with beautiful views over Lake Lucerne via numerous hairpin bends.
When we arrived in the village, it was extremely busy, with a market going on opposite the hotel. However, we were soon pointed in the direction of Reception and checked in by the manager, who spoke excellent English. Our room was on the first floor, with a lovely view of mountains and one of the four cable cars in the village from the spacious shared patio. Parking had been tricky earlier, but once the market finished we were able to get into the hotel car park.
We ate in the restaurant, which was extremely busy with several private events, as well as guests, so staff were very busy. We chose the set menu of asparagus soup, Cordon Bleu and very boozy sorbet. All was delicious, though service a little haphazard due to the number of customers.
Our room was quiet and comfortable, very clean, though so warm we had to leave the door open onto the patio.
Breakfast was a buffet, but included fresh fruit, Bircher muesli, eggs, cereals and pastries, with excellent coffee. All was great value, with very friendly staff in a stunning setting. We would love to return next time we visit Switzerland.
