Staff under pressure
The Ballymascanlon Hotel has always been a favourite of my family for decades, for their high quality and high customer service. I booked months ahead for 2 nights for my husband's 'big birthday' treat. Unfortunately my high expectations were not really met this time. Having stayed at the hotel a year ago for my Mum's birthday, I was hoping for the same type of experience. Linda on Reception was extremely welcoming at that time, and made sure of a lovely room with a bath and beautiful view, as well as an acknowledgment of Mum's birthday left in the room. However, a different lady on check-in this time around gave the impression she was just not as bothered, when asked if we could move to a room with a bath. I had paid for a "superior" room. No acknowledgment of my husband's birthday either, which of course is something the hotel is not obliged to do, but I just felt we were only a number this time, in contrast to the very different welcome on the previous stay. The range and quality at breakfast was excellent, as was the Thai Chicken Salad in the Bar. However, there seemed to be a problem at breakfast time on the Tuesday morning with not enough staff to clear tables.The lady simply took note of guest room numbers and asked guests to wait in lounge area until tables were ready, and food needed to be replenished even when we were called in. Again, I felt slightly disappointed that staff seemed to be under pressure here as well. Just not as special as I know it can be.
