8/10 Very good

Accommodation was excellent and staff were very helpful and attentive. Had dinner both nights we were there. First night - lovely meal, second night - terrible. Staff did offer compensation for meal. We would definitely return to this hotel.

Beautiful place to stay

Check in staff was brilliant however the service staff in the restaurant were not as good in the evening. The breakfast staff excellent. The room and the grounds excellent.

Wonderful place to stay.

Have just returned from a wonderful break at the Black Horse. The surroundings are idyllic with lavender fields, apple and plum trees as well as all the beaitiful plants Everywhere is immaculately maintained from the grounds to the restaurant and cottages. The staff were so kind and helpful . Would return in a heartbeat.

The rosemary suite was ideal for 2 couples. Really spacious with super king beds and both en suite. Shower had great water pressure too! All the staff were absolutely lovely, and couldnt be more helpful when i was struggling with bags and a baby!

Absolutely gorgeous place with a great dinner and breakfast. MASSIVE room and bath (Oak room highly recommended) but take your own bubble bath! Really, really glad we had dinner and breakfast there because the food and service was insanely good. Check-in and out staff were extremely friendly and helpful too.

Ok for 1 night

Only stayed for 1 night after a trip to Beamish Living Museum. Hotel was ok but food (dinner) wasn't nice at all. I got the steak and ale pie and the pastry was rock hard, couldn't get a normal knife through it. I must say, the food was piping hot which was great though. Told the waitress, and all she said was, ok, i'll tell the chef. Breakfast again was piping hot and delicious. Overall, we probably wouldn't stay again

We'll be back!

We chose a bad day to go, there was a Christmas fare on in a marquee in the grounds and the place was packed out with every available member of staff busy in the restaurant, so there was no one mannig the reception, so, we did as the notice on the door said and asked a member of staff to check us in, and although she was rushed of her feet she got us checked in along with another couple who had also arrived. That was the only delay we had during our two night stay. The room (Sage) was warm, comfortable and very clean. The food was top notch too apart an amour plated topping on the steak pie, but the steak was as tender and tasty as you like. The staff were spot on, very polite and attentive without being overly so.

Barbara, 1-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

The room was beautifully decorated and very clean and comfortable. The tray with tea and coffee and bottled water and cookies was very welcome. We booked dinner and the steak pie was exceptional and the service was good. Breakfast was also very good and it was lovely to sit in the pretty conservatory. We are happy to recommend this hotel and definitely would return ourselves
 Tasty dinner!
Lovely conservatory where we ate
Our room... set out as a little cottage!

Average stay

My wife and I stayed at the Black Horse for a night as we were visiting Beamish Museum. Check in was easy and we were shown to our room by the lady on reception which was a nice touch. Almost immediately after settling into the room we noticed a persistent knocking noise which sounded like it was possibly the water pipes or heating system but it was really distracting and frankly annoying after a while. We ignored it as best we could but sadly it wasn’t easy to relax. There was a dead wasp by the bath, quite a lot of dust on the shower head which clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly in a while as well as toothpaste stains in the sink. The following morning at breakfast we ordered eggs Benedict and eggs and salmon on toast. Sadly they were lukewarm at best which was strange as there was barely anyone else in the restaurant so wasn’t overly busy. When we went to check out we handed our key back to one of the waitresses as reception wasn’t manned and wasn’t asked how our stay was, maybe only a small gripe but things like that go a long way. Sadly overall we felt a bit disappointed with our stay

Great hotel

Beautiful room, friendly staff and the best breakfast ever
Elizabeth, 2-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

Beautiful, spacious and clean accommodation. All staff were very friendly from check-in, waiting staff, housekeeping staff, to grounds maintenance. Even the chef took the time to speak to us after breakfast. The outside area is perfect for young families - there’s a great, enclosed play park and lovely green spaces (with tractors to play on!) for young children to run about. Both the Sunday roast and breakfast were delicious. A brilliant location for exploring a beautiful area of the country.

Lovely hotel with amazing country views

Lovely hotel with amazing country views. Check in and out was very smooth with a lovely lady on reception. The room, just a standard double, was very nice although the floor could have been cleaner. The service in the restaurant was very slow and the food a bit hit or miss, on the first night our meal wasn’t very nice but the next night it was good. In the morning we waited 45 minutes for our cooked breakfast and the selection of cold items was quite poor and no tongs for the bread. It’s a shame that the restaurant is letting down what is otherwise an excellent hotel.

Birthday Get Away

Came here for my partners 50th birthday, we had a fantastic stay from start to finish, we stayed in Thyme the room was spacious and beautifully presented and lovely and warm when we walked through the door. The surroundings were stunning, peaceful and tranquil. The pub was lovely for an afternoon drink after unpacking. Our restaurant meal on the night was lovely too also the breakfast on the morning was delicious, compliments to the chef. I would highly recommend this place for a little get away. Perfect.
