Gipsy Hill Hotel is a little bit tired but this is to be expected in a building of this vintage. The staff are fantastic and they work tirelessly to accommodate our needs as conference guests. Jackie is a diamond.

Good quality -price

Large room with comfortable beds. The hotel has beautiful antique furniture and it's a pleasure to look at. Large TV in the room. Good water pressure in the bathtub. Heating working very well. No problem with parking. Long stairs to get to the room. Staff very kind and helpful.

Won’t be returning.

We arrived and no one was at the reception, we rang the bell no one. In the end we ended up calling the hotel number and then the receptionist appeared at the desk. The hotel is very dated, musky smell throughout. Only toiletries provided (after stating provided) was a small bar of soap. We had to go buy shower gel. Net curtain had holes and ripped and windows with black mould. Carpet stained with a red mark. The shower was powerful and hot although again not overly clean. Small tea and coffee station table which was good although the table was worn. After a long day we wanted a decent sleep at least but the bed especially left side you could feel the springs. Don’t mind the dated decor but would appreciate more cleanliness at least!

This was an adequate stop over. It was good value for money but requires some refurbishment.

I liked the fact that it was away from the immediate noise of the traffic and a nice distance from the main road, without feeling too isolated. I also liked the style of furniture in the hotel and the way you felt you could almost be in a different era, when you were in the bedroom and in the sitting area downstairs, it was a good heartwarming feeling. I was transported to a less hectic time and lifestyle in the few days i stayed here and i wish i could have stayed longer

Easy to find, easy to park, good bar, nice food, friendly and quick service, comfy beds and quiet rooms that aren't stuffy.

The room was clean but cold, I had to ask for the heating to be put on. The food was embarrassing, I've had better meals from a supermarket cafe. Friendly staff but a very dated hotel.

2/10 Poor

The outer entrance to the annex was full rubbish cigarette ends and litter. My batroom sani-bin was full to the top of medical? tubes, it had not been emptied before my arrival. This could have been a bio hazard and also reflected on the overall cleanliness of the room. I reported what I had found to a member of staff the following morning. No apology from the hotel has been forthcoming.

Gypsy Hill Hotel, Exeter, UK.

Our stay was amazing. Very enjoyable and pleasantly very surprising considering its location. The aproach is on a narrow road. Very comfortable room and clean. Breakfast was good. We stayed one night and did not have any other meal. Noticed it was rated as a 3 star hotel. Think it should have 4 stars!

Comfortable stay

My stay at the Gypsy Hill Hotel was good, the staff are very helpful & friendly. We are a meal in the evening of Lamb Shank & it was delicious. The breakfast was well cooked & there was plenty to fill you up. The only slight downside is that the rooms could be revamped & modernised. The room was clean but could have been cleaner. The beds were comfortable & there were plenty of cupboards for clothes etc. So I would recommend this Hotel to stay at.

Family visit to Exeter

The rooms were spacious and very clean and tidy. Good shower and toilet facilities in our ensuite bathroom. Nice comfortable beds for my wife and I plus our 13 year old son. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the cooked breakfast was both delicious and plentiful. Plenty of cereals or toast, bread and marmalade, jam options as well for those who didn't want a full English. Will definitely stay here again if rooms are available.

2/10 Poor

Don’t stay here.

The only good thing about this hotel was the lovely friendly lady on reception. The room we was given must have been last decorated 25 years ago. Filthy stained walls, carpet, rusty light fittings, mould on bathroom tiles and ceiling. A “bewear” sign in the hall stated it was being redecorated, no sign of any such works. Other than the sign and some floor covering, the only thing to beware of is the state of the place. At breakfast there was no staff greeting or acknowledgement, presumably it was one of the owners on duty. They acted like royalty and clearly have no customer service skills. It wasn’t the best cooked breakfast with cheap ingredients being used. The condition of the dining area was a lot better than our room to be fair.

Good in Parts

It was good enough for one night and the dinner was good. Some of the service could be better but the waitress at breakfast was very helpful

Very disappointing, not recommended

Very disappointing. Staff were very rude when we got there, rushing to book us in. Breakfast was very slow, nothing put out even though we had to book a time to come down for it, had to ask for virtually everything to be topped up from cutlery, to juice, to eggs, to bread, to sausages. A good breakfast, but it took so long for everything to arrive what you had on your plate was already cold. Cleanliness - this left a lot to be desired, the toilets had signs up to guide you on cleaning your hands with soap for 20-30 seconds etc, but despite this, the hotel never left any soap out the whole time of our stay. The grounds on the photo must of been taken years ago, the rooms in the horrid motel part behind it had rubbish, broken wood and was generally a mess - not nice to look out onto. For the money it cost to stay here, very disappointed. One good thing, the bed was comfy and the pillows good, although the divan bases were tattered and stained. Very disappointing and would not recommend.

Ok but in need of major refurbishment

The hotel is basically quite old, tired and in need of major update. It was comfy and the staff were welcoming, friendly and polite. It served our purpose as a base whilst visiting relatives nearby. Our room smelt musty, there were cobwebs around the window frames and dead insects under the armchairs. The bed was comfy but very old. The floorboards creaked. The buffet breakfast was tasty and plentiful.

All the staff are courteous and helpful. Rooms are clean and tidy. Definitely no complaints about the evening meals, only downside was not being able to get an early breakfast on the Sunday.

Lovely staff and very helpful. Property a little tired and for money paid, would have expected a little better communication condition. Little bit of paint and attention would be good.
2-night trip

4/10 Fair

The staff seemed great, friendly and responsive. The breakfast was good and the bedding clean. Th shower was tong and hot. That's where the good points end. On arrival we found our room (in the 'Bungalow') had a filthy carpet, mould on the ceiling in the bedroom and especially in the bathroom, the walls were covered in marks with peeling wallpaper and a light shade that was completely 'on the wonk'. The 'hairdryer' was more of a 'hair warmer' and the complimentary toiletries consisted of a microscopic bit of soap. Worst of all the there were several hairs of unknown origin in the bath and the bathroom floor as dirty. If the bathroom had been cleaned previously it was an extremely poor job. We went back to reception and asked for another room but they were full apparently. The manager then came and cleaned the bathroom and was very apologetic but the state of the room as a whole was a long way past apologies. We searched for another room anywhere close but sadly everything was sold out (Devon in August...). So we were stuck. Room conditions & decor like this would have been poor in the 70s. The staff seem to really want to do a good job and the breakfast was excellent. So why don't they actually drag the rooms into at minimum presentable standard? There are plenty of other things problems I would talk about (no tables laid for breakfast, cobwebs and spiders happily loving in the 'Lawns' room where breakfast is served etc.) but you probably get the drift already. Avoid.
