Lagos' Centro Histórico captivates with cobblestone streets winding past 16th-century walls and golden churches adorned with azulejo tiles. The haunting former slave market stands as a sobering historical monument while ancient fortifications frame stunning harbour views. Traditional tavernas serve fresh seafood and local specialities between historic explorations and cultural discoveries. Highly walkable streets limit vehicle access, making this area perfect for leisurely exploration. Family-run restaurants and waterfront cafés offer authentic Portuguese flavours while boutique hotels in converted historic buildings provide charming accommodation with old-world character.

Porto de Mós
Porto de Mós wraps you in a golden sand dream framed by dramatic ochre cliffs that practically beg to be photographed. This peaceful pocket of the Algarve offers the perfect escape from Lagos' busier spots with scenic coastal trails winding along the Atlantic. The Ponta da Piedade lighthouse stands watch nearby, while the protected cove below creates ideal swimming conditions for beach lovers. The area serves up fresh seafood at beachfront restaurants where you can watch the sunset paint the cliffs. Modern holiday apartments and villas with sea views make up most accommodation, though public transport is limited so having a car is smart. Beach season brings the area to life, but even then, you'll find plenty of quiet spots along the coastal paths.
Ameijeira
Ameijeira gives you the best of both worlds in Lagos—calm residential streets just a short stroll from stunning beaches. Walk to Praia da Batata or Praia do Pinhão for golden sands and azure waters without the tourist crush. The area feels authentically Portuguese with its whitewashed homes and terracotta roofs, perfect for travellers who want local flavour. You'll need to head into Lagos centre for restaurants and shopping, just 15-20 minutes away on foot. Most accommodation here are upscale holiday rentals and private villas with pools, ideal for those seeking a peaceful home base with easy beach access.
Funchal
Lagos enchants visitors with golden beaches nestled beneath dramatic sandstone cliffs and azure waters. The historic town centre charms with whitewashed buildings and cobblestone streets that wind past 16th-century walls. Adventurers flock to Ponta da Piedade where limestone arches and hidden grottos create a natural seaside cathedral worth exploring by boat or foot. Fresh seafood dominates local menus, from cataplana stews to grilled sardines at marina restaurants. While the compact historic centre is walkable, regional buses connect to beaches every 30 minutes. Boutique hotels in town and beachfront resorts offer authentic Portuguese charm with traditional tile work.
Atalaia's golden beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs create a perfect coastal escape in Lagos. Sheltered Praia da Batata offers ideal swimming waters, while scenic clifftop trails deliver breathtaking Atlantic views. This quiet area blends traditional Portuguese charm with modern holiday villas, creating a peaceful alternative to the busier parts of town. The handful of beachfront cafés serve fresh grilled sardines with ocean views, though most close early evening. You'll find mainly boutique guesthouses and self-catering apartments instead of large hotels. Getting around is easy on foot via coastal paths, with Lagos centre just a 20-minute walk away.
You can stroll along Marina de Lagos for relaxing water views when you're in Marina de Lagos. Hotels.com travellers also say the area is full of friendly people and that it has lots of nice beaches. Lagos is gorgeous and amazing- lots of beaches and wooden walkways along the coast to explore, great shops and restaurants, and nice holiday decorations. There's also a great range of boat tours and activities.

Lagos seemed very safe to us. At no time did we feel uncomfortable even out in the evening/night. There are panhandlers in the old town but they were not persistent. Lots of places to eat. Lots of things to see. Hiking was great with fantastic views.

Its October and its low season. The old town is ok but not much to see. The harbour and the boatcruises are great. We used Lagos and this resort as our home base to see the rest of Algarve coast.

Lagos and the surrounding area was our favorite part of Portugal. The people of Portugal, overall, were gracious and helpful everywhere we went.
"Had a great time even though weather conditions permitted us to enter some of the caves which is not usual but Mike the “Viking” made it eventful and gave us some great knowledge. Loved his energy. Would book again :-)"
"wow! what can I say? this was by far the best hotel in Lagos that i’ve ever stayed in. it’s only a few months old but it’s already running like a well oiled machine. the staff was amazing, the kitchen was excellent, and the rooftop pool… the cherry on top. i can’t rave enough about this place. it was a dream!"
"Modern well appointed rooms. Good sized pool area and often very quiet. Excellent breakfast and short five minute walk to the beach. Not
many families when we stayed and more couples. About a twenty minute walk into the main town or around five euros in a taxi. Would definitely recommend this hotel it was great and we would definitely go back."
