Asama Onsen wraps you in 1,300 years of hot spring tradition just a quick trip from Matsumoto. Steam rises from mineral-rich waters while historic ryokans with curved tile roofs nestle among forested hills. Traditional bathhouses like Asama Onsen Kaikan offer authentic soaking experiences, and walking paths wind through otherworldly steam vents near the cultural landmark of Asama Shrine. Traditional kaiseki dining features seasonal mountain vegetables and river fish, primarily at ryokans where meals come with your stay. Most visitors arrive by car as public transit is limited, but the compact resort area is pleasant for walking despite some steep terrain. The peaceful atmosphere focuses on relaxation rather than nightlife, perfect for wellness seekers.

Our stay in Matsumoto was brief but we found the people to be warm, the city itself to be beautiful framed by soaring mountains and rivers. The castle was a majestic treat to visit. We will come back to spend more time.
