Comfortable and fun communal living
The hotel is located on the 4th floor of the building. The staff behind the reception were charming, polite and patient (perhaps used to slightly hapless single men like me). After a very clear brief of the facilities available, I headed into the hotel proper.
A single floor plate, divided into different areas (capsule sleeping area, washing/onsen area, locker area, lounge, restaurant). Apart from your single sleeping capsule, all the other facilities are shared. However, I never felt like I was waiting to use anything. To the contrary, everything from the washing facilities to the lounge beds were always readily available. Breakfast (included in the ludicrously cheap price) was delicious and plentiful.
It goes without saying that the washing area was a traditional onsen set-up (no clothes except a small towel) that included two small areas that were the entry/exit points for the rest of the hotel. As such there was nakedness/semi-nakedness drifting in and out of these areas. But it wasn’t off-putting (I’d been in Japan for a few weeks at this point).
The whole point of me staying here (the capsule) sort of took a back-seat to be honest. However, the capsule bed was comfortable and big enough (I’m 6 foot 1).
An absolutely fantastic stay. If you are happy to be sharing ‘living space’ with other guests, this is a great, cost-effective way to stay in Nagoya. If you’ve been to boarding school, or shared communal showers in a sports club, you’ll feel right at home.
