very casual, family/child friendly hotel
very friendly staffs that glow with traditional Japanese hospitality and culture
quiet, yet very central / walkable location to marketplace, JR, restaurant district
spacious Japanese style tatami room
However, need to set realistic expectation, this hotel has nothing fancy, may even be dated to some people

Decent and comfortable stay.
The room is very small but well designed. Comfortable beds. We missed the breakfast by a few minutes. In fact I tended to just grab some boiled egg but was not allowed, due to lack of communication.

My stay at Kikuya was great. The location of the hotel is top notch, it is right next to the Hakodate JR station, and it takes just a couple of minutes to walk to the closest city tram station. The famous Asahi fish market is right behind the hotel. There are several restaurants and convenience stores around the neighborhood too, so no need to worry about where to get food or necessities. We feel safe walking around at night without problem.
The hotel is family run, not new, but very well maintained. The room is clean, a little small but typical for Japanese hotel room. Hotel staffs are friendly and helpful, but speak very little English.
Overall I enjoyed staying at Kikuya and it will be my top choices if I visited Hakodate again.

Good (old) Hotel to stay at budget price.
Although the hotel is not a new building, the service and condition is average to good. Service is good. Breakfast is western style (coffee and bread) and is good.

Good location but small room.
Best part is the owners speak english and are very helpful. They called cab for me explaining itvia difficult to wait for cab out in cold winter. The location is great. However the room is too squeezy for my family of 5 and the toilet is one of the smallest I have seen.

OK hotel
Room was really large for a Japanese hotel room though the bathroom was very small as expected. Location is really good - close to JR station, a 7-11, fish market and tram stop / bus station.
This is a budget hotel that has seen better days but it suited me for a 1 night stay.

Basic but clean hotel near station
Stayed in hotel kikuya for one night - Hakodate was a transit stop for us from Tokyo to Sapporo. The staff was friendly and the room was clean (though it's a bit dated). It's fine to stay there for one night as it is so close to the train station. We would stay somewhere nicer if we are to spend more than one night in Hakodate.

A short walk from JR Hakodate station
The location is key for this little hotel. It's just a few minutes walk from the JR station, so any type of public transportation that Hakodate has to offer is at your doorstep.
As for the room, it was nothing fancy, but more than okay for a solo traveller like me. There's a single bed, private bathroom with amenities (no hairdryer, but I didn't ask). It was a bit chilly when I checked-in and needed to take a nap. So I went to tell one of the staff, who seemed very eager to help and turned on the central heating system for me right away.
All in all, this hotel may not be the best place from my trip, but I was happy with mostly everything during my stay.

The Bed was terrible, it's very noisy
Overall I'm a bit disappoint of this hotel. as we first arrived there's no elevator and we are living in the 5th floor. so we won't be able to carry our luggage from stairs. So we have no choice but to left our luggage in the lobby. At the same time the elevator is repairing and we have to carry those from a snowy day to just get in the lobby for checkin. The staff is so kind however this hotel looks like he is the only person to manage. Besides the bath tube hot water is very unstable, be careful as it will suddenly turns to a really HOT water!!! My hubby was dropped in the bath tube because of this! Lucky he didn't get much hurt.
A pretty old style hotel, and one thing is there's NO hair dryer!!! I'm a bit shock as I'm a lady and for sure I can't let my hair dry at night naturally. Also the bad is terrible is really hard and we don't have a comfortable sleep at night. so I guess I won't be back for sure.
