If you don't mind about the smell of dirty carpet and stuffy room that doesn't have air circulation. Then you can try this Hostel. It's cheap but not clean.

6/10 Okay

The European Hostile is okay. It's average. A Meh if maybe. It's quiet and I got some good sleep. However the bathrooms need a lot of work. If one shower doesn't have hot water then you have to go into another shower that has hot water, problems with the light staying on, and a overflowing waste basket. No this place isn't big and fancy but it's a hole in wall place where it's quiet as soon as you get inside and place to get some sleep. It's worth its salt.

10/10 Excellent

I had a pleasant stay at The European Hostel. The location is convenient—close to public transport and just a short walk from many popular attractions in San Francisco. The front desk staff, especially Nick, was incredibly helpful, welcoming, and attentive to guests' needs, creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The rooms were clean and the facilities were well-maintained. The common areas, including the kitchen and lounge, were great for relaxing or connecting with other travelers. Housekeeping staff did a good job keeping everything tidy and fresh. Overall, it's a great budget-friendly option for solo travelers or small groups looking for a centrally located hostel with a community vibe. I would definitely stay here again!

I recently stayed at The European Hostel and had a great experience, especially thanks to the incredibly friendly and helpful staff. From the moment I arrived, they greeted me with a warm welcome and made me feel right at home. The front desk team was always ready to answer questions, give local tips, and assist with anything I needed during my stay. Their positive attitude and genuine kindness really stood out—it made a big difference and created a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere throughout the hostel. Whether it was helping with directions, recommending places to eat, or simply having a nice chat, the staff truly went above and beyond. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly place in San Francisco with a personal touch and amazing service, The European Hostel is a great choice. Highly recommended for solo travelers and backpackers who value a welcoming environment!

My stay at The European Hostel was wonderful! From the moment I arrived, the front desk staff—especially Nick—made me feel welcome and at ease. He is incredibly attentive, professional, and always ready to help with any questions or concerns. I truly appreciated the way he handled situations fairly when some guests didn’t follow house rules, always making sure the environment stayed clean, safe, and comfortable for everyone. The rest of the staff were also friendly and kept the common areas tidy, creating a warm and positive atmosphere. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, with fresh linens provided, and I had no trouble getting a good night’s sleep. The kitchen was equipped with everything needed for cooking your own meals, which is a great bonus for travelers who prefer homemade food. There are also plenty of nearby restaurants and cafés if you want to explore local flavors. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly place with a great location, comfortable beds, and a staff that genuinely cares about your experience, The European Hostel is a fantastic choice!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding Stay – Thanks to Nick! I recently stayed at The European Hostel in San Francisco and had a wonderful experience. The location is very convenient, with easy access to public transportation and plenty of food options nearby—from quick bites to diverse international cuisines. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, with fresh linens and supportive mattresses that made it easy to rest after a day of exploring the city. The rooms were kept tidy, and the common areas were clean and welcoming. However, what truly made my stay exceptional was Nick at the front desk. From the moment I arrived, he went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. He is incredibly professional, friendly, and attentive—always ready to help with directions, recommendations, or any questions. You can tell he genuinely cares about the guests and runs the front desk with efficiency and warmth. Nick’s positive attitude and willingness to go the extra mile made all the difference. Thanks to him, my check-in was smooth, and my stay felt safe and well taken care of. I can confidently say that Nick is a huge asset to this property, and his hospitality is one of the main reasons I’d come back. Highly recommend this hostel—great location, comfortable beds, and an exceptional front desk experience thanks to Nick!

5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely Amazing Staff – Especially Nick! I had an incredible experience staying at The European Hostel in San Francisco! The location is convenient, the atmosphere is friendly, and the amenities are just what you need for a comfortable stay — but what truly made my visit exceptional was the staff, especially Nick. From the moment I arrived, Nick went above and beyond to make sure I felt welcome and comfortable. He’s not just professional, but also genuinely kind, respectful, and always ready to help. Whether it was offering great local tips, helping with directions, or just checking in to make sure everything was okay, Nick made me feel more like a guest in someone’s home than just a traveler passing through. It’s rare to find someone so dedicated, thoughtful, and efficient. His warm energy and positive attitude truly made a difference in my stay. If you’re looking for a place with a staff that cares, this is it — and Nick is the heart of it all. Thank you, Nick and the entire European Hostel team! I’ll definitely be back.

I had a very good experience at The European Hostel and would like to appreciate both the front desk and the day and night cleaning staff. They work hard every day to keep the place as clean and comfortable as possible for all guests. I’ve seen some reviews saying the hostel is “smelly” or “dirty.” Yes, sometimes you might notice this—but it’s important to understand why. This is an economical shared hostel, and you’re sharing a room with 4 or 6 other people. Many guests are travelers or people working from out of state, and sometimes they don’t have the time to do laundry or organize their belongings until their days off. The front desk manager reminds them multiple times to keep things tidy, but he can’t force them if they truly don’t have the time—he respects their situation. At the end of the day, you’re paying around $25 per night, so you can’t expect 5-star hotel facilities. What you can expect is a safe, budget-friendly place to stay, with a management team that works hard to accommodate everyone and make the best of a shared living environment. If you’re looking for a low-cost option in San Francisco with a team that genuinely cares for its guests, The European Hostel is a solid choice.

My stay at The European Hostel was an excellent experience, and I want to especially recognize the amazing staff and front desk service. The facilities are well-maintained, the beds are comfortable, and the common areas are welcoming with a great atmosphere. One thing that really stood out to me was seeing the front desk manager, Nick, personally taking care of the property. If he notices something doesn’t look clean or comfortable, he doesn’t wait for someone else—he will sweep, mop, and tidy up the rooms and kitchen himself. His goal is always to make sure every guest feels good energy and a positive vibe during their stay. Nick is always ready to assist guests with a smile, no matter how busy things get. Unfortunately, I also witnessed times when some guests disrespected him or even threatened him, simply because they didn’t want to follow the house rules. These are rules that keep a shared space clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Sometimes people also leave bad reviews without realizing that they booked a shared facility with specific policies they agreed to before making a reservation. It’s important to understand how much effort and hard work Nick puts in every single day. He treats the hostel like his own home and works tirelessly to keep it safe and comfortable for all. At the end of the day, he’s also human—he has feelings, and it’s natural for him to feel hurt when his dedication isn’t respected. I truly appreciate the staff here, and I believe The Europea

Axan, 4-night trip

10/10 Excellent

I had a great experience staying at The European Hostel, and I especially want to compliment Nick at the front desk. He is not only professional but also genuinely cares about the comfort and safety of every guest. During my stay, I saw first-hand how he handles situations when some travelers don’t follow the house rules—especially in the kitchen. Unfortunately, a few guests left the kitchen messy, which gave others a chance to write negative reviews. But the truth is, these situations happen because of a few people who disregard shared space etiquette, not because of poor management. Nick always steps in to enforce the rules in a fair and respectful way, ensuring the hostel stays clean and welcoming for everyone. Some people might speak negatively about him without understanding the bigger picture. But in reality, he often goes above and beyond—sometimes even outside of his job responsibilities—to make guests feel at home. He treats the hostel as if it’s his own home, working hard to keep it safe, clean, and positive for everyone. To put it simply: if I came to your house and left a mess without following your rules, you wouldn’t be happy either. That’s why rules exist—so everyone can enjoy their stay. I truly appreciate the effort Nick puts into maintaining that balance. If you’re a respectful traveler who values a clean, safe, and friendly environment, this is the place for you. And Nick is one of the reasons why it stays that way.

As stated earlier, I saw a mouse scurry across the lounge area while I was preparing a meal in the adjacent kitchen. I have a phobia with mice so it greatly startled me. Also, the owner was initially abrasive on the phone, not a good 1st impression.
