10/10 Excellent
"We had a lovely over night stay in a superior room on the 4th floor - room 420. We used the leisure facilities which were very good. Nice Spacious room. Can’t complain for the price we paid I guess. A bit of constructive criticism for the hotel to bear in mind: 1) please leave more than 2 milk portions. We only had two between us. We would have loved a few more teas and coffees but didn’t want to chase around for milk. 2) the room was warm but when turned on, the aircon was very loud, we did loose some sleep."

Lumley Castle Hotel

Lumley Castle Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"Perfect for couples. It was quiet with beautiful surroundings. We took a walk to the river from the castle, and it was quiet as though we had the whole grounds to ourselves. The food was delicious and the room was cozy with a spacious bathroom. We were lucky as there was a wedding on and as a result, we were treated to a nighttime fireworks display! For us a 10/10. But be mindful that there is no AC in the room - that didn't bother us but might be an issue for others. Also note it's worth checking if there are events on as we didn't realize that if we had arrived earlier, we could have gone on a tour of the castle and had afternoon tea. We are looking forward to visiting again."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Durham

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most budget-friendly time to visit Durham is in January, February, and December, when hotel prices are generally lower. To fully appreciate the city's historical landmarks, cultural sites, and natural beauty, a stay of at least 2 to 3 days is recommended. During this time, visitors can explore the stunning cathedral, enjoy leisurely walks along the river, and experience the vibrant local culture, all while benefiting from great value for money. With the right timing, hotel prices may drop, making it an ideal opportunity for those looking to enjoy Durham on a budget.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: Discover discounted rates to Durham with Hotels.com by exploring the DealsOpens in a new window section, where you may uncover attractive hotel options. If you’re planning a spontaneous trip, head to the Last-Minute Deals area, as you could find reduced rates on hotels near your travel date. Stay informed through email alerts or push notifications, so if prices drop or rooms become available, you’re among the first to know. Additionally, the Smart Shopping tool on the app allows travellers to compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you’re more likely to spot a great hotel deal.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may vary depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and time of year, so being flexible with your dates might help you save on your stay at a hotel in Durham. For those seeking a distinctive experience, boutique hotels can offer a more personalised stay and occasionally better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we will inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average, and if it is on the higher side, we may suggest more affordable dates to assist you in potentially finding a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive, but thanks to Durham's excellent public transport connections, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel a bit further out that remains well linked. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often great value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more genuine and budget-friendly experience.
