Matera is stunning. We chose to get a hire car from Bari airport as driving is fairly straightforward and parking is super easy outside of the ZTL with the Easypark app to pay. Lots of amazing bars and restaurants and sights to see. Lots of walking.

Matera is a unique human inhabitation. Makes you wonder how people lived there so many years ago and built the stone houses and lived on the caves. We were in awe!

I'd recommend to stay 2 nights to enjoy the quiet evening and morning to avoid the swarm of day trip tourists. From 10am-5pm is like a Venice, the amount of tourists is crazy. It's a completely different place after 5-6pm if you want nice photos.

Matera is a very interesting city, and we took a short tour with a guide to acclimate ourselves. Lots of hills and walking, and the views are amazing. There was an amazing restaurant down the street serving local food, and lots of shops nearby.

One of the most unique cities built into a mountain. You can't see the actual city until you round the corner and it is a shocking surprise! Lots of great places to eat!

Stay 1-2 nights to avoid day time tourists. It was touristic but still well maintained and enjoyable. You do need comfortable shoes with good grips.

So much history in this town. We only stayed one night, but would recommend two nights, to see more
"Beautiful hotel in the perfect location if you want to be right in the Sassi di Matera. Great restaurants and shops nearby, staff were all very friendly. "
"Could not believe the beautiful reception rooms you walk through to get breakfast, as good as visiting a stately home. Our room was wonderful and the staff very helpful. The terrace area was a great place to watch the sunset."
"The location of this property is amazing with a shared terrace with a stunning view, the room was cozy and clean, the staff is welcoming, great breakfast and the termae on the premises is a big plus to unwind and detoxify."
"Beautiful property in the heart of an amazing city. Staff were very helpful and friendly. They made a delicious birthday cake for our son and we had a great evening in the restaurant with excellent food and service. One of our rooms did however smell of damp and the door didn’t lock properly, it is a cave but none of the other rooms were like this, it wasn’t pleasant but they happily moved us to another one. Small details could be improved, bathrobes worn thin and room service trays left in the rooms and only collected when repeatedly asked. Otherwise a gorgeous hotel and a lovely stay. "
"Unique Experience in Matera!
A real adventure—sleeping in a beautiful cave room was unforgettable! The breakfast was fantastic, and the people were so kind and friendly. The atmosphere was peaceful, and the design of the room kept the history alive. Plenty of great restaurants around, all within walking distance. We would love to come back again!"
