Great city to explore outside the summer months because you can get into restaurants and stores easily. Great time (April) to see the Flower Fields and go to a show at the live Theater in town. Good live music venues.

Carlsbad has a great beach and a wonderful old downtown. Lots of excellent cafes and a few fun bars. Overall, it is too crowded and has too much traffic for me but then I am from a small village in the Sierras.

Excellent town and dining, shopping, and beach options, even in January. We rode the Coaster train in, and didn't need a car to get around the downtown tourist area.
