POOR
this is not a regular hotel...its sort of a converted apartment. The heat was on (a space heater) on a 90 degree day & there was no instructions on how to turn on the a/c (I found a fuse box in the closet that turned on the a/c but had no thermostat so it was on or off). I called the "24 hour emergency number in my packet" and didnt get a reply til 8 hours later. None of the windows had working locks (and 1 window is on a fire escape) and there was a catwalk with people hanging out along the skylite looking down into my room. Its like staying at your grandma's house...and that's not a good thing for an almost $300 a night room.

Independent living indeed
My first impression of the Townhouse Inn wasn't especially positive but I have to say, this is now in my 2-3 favorite hotels in NYC and I have stayed in probably 30-40 different hotels in the Flatiron/USQ/Midtown area over the past 6 years. I arrived at the locked front door and wasn't sure what to do, since that is quite unlike most other chain hotels at which I stay. I pressed the buzzer for the lobby to no avail, and finally called the phone number listed for the hotel. Eric was gracious when he answered and let me know the code for the lock box with the front door key in it. I basically checked myself in and then was blown away by the coziness and home-y feeling of the room. I felt like I just lived there! The locked front door actually made me feel much safer by the end of my stay. The breakfast was not extraordinary but sufficient. I have two wishes that if fulfilled would make me never want to book elsewhere when I'm in NYC: a fitness area or some fitness equipment that could be taken up to one's room, and that the blackout shades fit over the windows better for room darkening purposes.

Loved it
Lovely place, huge room. Very friendly and clean. Nice breakfast in a cozy, beautiful room. Felt like a European pension. I would definitely stay there again

A Home Away From Home...
The Townhouse Inn of Chelsea is a little oasis in the middle of Manhattan. A great breakfast to start your day in a very comfy area just off the greeting area. Our room with a huge skylight was very comfortable and quiet. Eric and his staff are very friendly and informative. The highlight of our stay would have to be meeting Sophie and Max. Eric's two beautiful and sweet English Bulldogs.

Great Value..with just a few details to improve
Neat spot BUT needs a tune up. This is an old, converted townhouse mansion.I love the IDEA of this place: a 'BnB' in the middle of NYC, The Townhouse has so much potential to be extra-cool, however they need a few (and easy and prob not too costly) basics to fix: the room furniture was pretty beat up (It seemed they meant to have more vintage-y furniture) with a saggy couch and chair. The bed too was saggy with a pretty crummy mattress.(Its is fine to go vintage...but should not be beat up-vintage if you know what I mean). The TV is an old tube model that was probably from 1985 which was sort of amusing to watch. On the plus side, the room was still charming and clean. The bathroom was also fine with good water pressure and quickly heating water. They do need to improve the bath towels as were thin and rough like a cheap motel (Hey..run over to Marshall's and buy some plush towels for $8 a piece!) There is a shared space 'library' on the second floor with coffee and snacks and stuff (also cool) The host who greeted me was also nice too.I got a great price($235) here during an expensive hotel week (most nearby were $350+) in NYC. If you are on a budget this is still a very good stay for the money.
