Excellent stay, great location, friendly vibe
I was very happy here. The hotel was steps from the train station, but quiet in the evenings. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Room was cute, with a bit of a “groovy” color scheme. Some interesting local items in the (free!) minibar. Bathroom was sparkling clean. Bathrobes were a nice touch. WiFi was good. The general vibe of the place seemed to be that they wanted you to enjoy your stay. Breakfast was delicious and in a gorgeous dining room. Easy walk to tourist sites, or take the nearby tram. Great for train travelers.

Best service and hospitality in Basel
After staying at a number of other hotels in Basel, I decided to try Hotel Gaia. This is by far my favorite hotel in the city. What is exceptional about this hotel is their service and hospitality in all aspects - from the front desk to the restaurant to housekeeping. They anticipated my needs and did many little things to make my stay comfortable and relaxing and my trip easy.

Perfect stay
Wonderful small hotel next to train station. Excellent staff front desk friendly efficient : the buffet guy was delightful and the food was very nice. Just lover the elevator with adjacent doors, very cool.

Terrible Service - Avoid!!
When I booked this hotel at a cost of 770 CHF for two nights (thats £600), I had high hopes. The checking was really good and friendly. My hopes were dashed upon entering the room. The decor was like something you would find in a care home. Granted the bathroom had been refurbished but the room was not what I would expect for this money. On checkin I was told the mini bar was free. I was disappointed to find that the water had not been restocked on the second night. I had received an invite to provide feedback by a portal linked to the hotel so I politely voiced my dissatisfaction and went to bed. 20-30 minutes later I had an angry call from a hotel staff member asking (Shouting I should add), What was wrong with the bar? Tired, I explained that I was not interested in a discussion as I was going to sleep. The man then shouted ... “No, you no go to sleep!! You answer the question as you complain three times”. No if their survey tool sends an email for each dissatisfied answer that is not my issue. But to feel threatened in a hotel that I am paying a lot of money for is a disgrace. I am a big guy but so threatened I actually placed the luggage rack just in front of the door before going to sleep - this would give me prior warning of anyone trying to come in at night. I voiced my complaint at the desk on checkout but did not have time to stick around and run through everything that happened. Suffice to say, the hotel never made contact.
